How to use this roadmap

Use this page to plan what to build next. Each row lists a skill area and includes placeholder links. As we create new assets, replace placeholder links with real files.

Content strategy: Keep learner text short and simple, but make the thinking strong. Use games, short stories, picture prompts, and quick checks.

Quick checks (assessment ideas)

These are simple, fast checks you can do after a game or story.

Area Ask the child Look for
Story retell "Tell me what happened first, next, last." Order, key details, simple complete sentences
Letter/sound "What sound does this letter make?" Quick recall, correct sound, tries even if unsure
Counting "Count these. How many?" One-to-one counting, stops at the total
Add/take away "We had 5. We got 2 more. How many now?" Uses fingers/objects, explains thinking

Missouri Developmental Standards for Kindergarten

Focus: Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), executive functioning, and approaches to learning. While academic standards (Math, ELA) are part of the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS), developmental skills are primarily outlined in the School Counseling Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) and the Missouri Early Learning Standards (MELS).

These "soft skills" are critical for kindergarten success: social interaction, emotional regulation, and executive function.

1. Social & Emotional Development (SEL)

Source: Missouri School Counseling Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)

Understanding Self (GLE Strand 1)

Skill Code Example
Self-Concept: Identify basic feelings (happy, sad, mad, scared) SE.1.A.1 "I feel mad." "I feel scared."
Balancing Life Roles: Identify personal roles in the family SE.1.B.1 "I am a sister." "I am a helper."
Citizenship: Identify character traits needed for different situations SE.1.C.1 Being honest, being kind

Interacting with Others (Social Skills) (GLE Strand 2)

Skill Code Example
Quality Relationships: Demonstrate how to be a friend (share, take turns) SE.2.A.1 "Your turn, then my turn."
Respect for Diversity: Identify similarities and differences SE.2.B.1 "We both like games." "We like different foods."
Empathy: Identify feelings of others SE.2.C.1 "She is crying because she fell."

Conflict Resolution & Personal Safety (GLE Strand 3)

Skill Code Example
Safe Choices: Identify safe and healthy choices at home and school SE.3.A.1 Walking feet, safe hands
Personal Safety: Distinguish between safe and unsafe situations SE.3.B.1 Strangers, fire safety
Coping Skills (Resiliency): Identify life changes/events and simple ways to cope SE.3.C.1 Deep breath, ask an adult for help

2. Executive Functioning & Approaches to Learning

Source: Aligned with MELS and School Counseling GLEs

Self-Regulation (Executive Function)

Skill What it looks like
Impulse Control Follows classroom rules and routines with occasional reminders
Emotional Regulation Uses words/gestures/actions (instead of tantrums) to show feelings
Attention Sustains attention to a task (about 5-10 minutes for teacher-directed tasks)

Initiative & Persistence (Resiliency)

Skill Example
Persistence Keeps trying when a task is difficult (zip a coat, solve a puzzle)
Initiative Tries new activities without needing immediate adult direction
Independence Manages belongings and self-care routines (backpack, coat, hand washing)

3. Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Source: Integrated across Science (NGSS) and Math (MLS) Practices

Skill Example
Curiosity (ask questions) "Why is the sky blue?" "How does this work?"
Cause and Effect "If I push the tower, it falls."
Problem Solving (use materials) Uses blocks/counters to solve simple problems or model situations
Sorting & Classifying (cognitive flexibility) Sort by color, then switch and sort by shape
Perspective Taking Begins to understand others may think/feel differently
Summary of key "soft skills" for kindergarten entry:
Conflict Resolution: uses words (not physical actions).
Resiliency: recovers from small disappointments in a reasonable time.
Executive Function: can follow 2-step directions ("Put your bag in your cubby and come to the carpet").
