🏡 Back Home
You landed softly on the concrete floor of your basement. The air was cool and smelled like home. In your arms, the little Lunari blinked its big eyes, looking around in confusion.
The metal box was humming softly. Sentinel-7's hologram appeared, but this time it seemed softer, its light warmer.
"CONGRATULATIONS, CHOSEN ONE. AND YOU, CHOSEN COMPANION," the Sentinel said. "YOU HAVE PASSED ALL THREE TRIALS. YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELVES WORTHY."
"So... it was all a test?" Marcus asked. "The hunter? The portal?"
"THE SHADE-STALKER WAS A SIMULATION. A VERY ADVANCED ONE. BUT YOUR CHOICES... YOUR COURAGE... AND YOUR HEART... WERE VERY REAL," Sentinel-7 explained. "WE HAD TO BE SURE."
"Sure of what?" you asked, gently setting the Lunari down. It immediately scurried over and hugged your leg.
🌌 The Truth
"THIS BOX IS A GUARDIAN CRADLE," the Sentinel revealed. "IT IS ONE OF THOUSANDS, SCATTERED ACROSS THE GALAXY. ITS PURPOSE IS TO FIND BEINGS WITH THE RIGHT QUALITIES—INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, AND COMPASSION—TO BECOME PROTECTORS."
"Protectors?" you echoed.
"OF THE GALAXY. OF THOSE WHO CANNOT PROTECT THEMSELVES. LIKE THIS YOUNG LUNARI," it said, gesturing to the creature by your feet. "THIS IS PRINCE FLUFFINGTON THE THIRD. HIS SHIP CRASH-LANDED ON A NEARBY MOON. WE BROUGHT HIM HERE TO SEE HOW YOU WOULD REACT. TO SEE IF YOU HAD THE HEART OF A TRUE GUARDIAN."
You and Marcus stared at the little furball. A prince? Prince Fluffington?
"So I'm not the only 'Chosen One'?" you asked.
"YOU ARE ONE OF MANY. A NEW RECRUIT IN A SECRET, INTERGALACTIC LEAGUE OF HEROES," Sentinel-7 declared. "YOUR FINAL TASK IS TO USE THE CRADLE TO SEND THE PRINCE SAFELY HOME."
🚀 One Last Mission
Sentinel-7 instructed you on what to do. The three objects you had collected—the key, the crystal, and the star—were artifacts that powered the cradle's functions.
You placed the key into a hidden slot on the box. Marcus placed the crystal in another. The box began to hum with power.
Finally, you placed the star-shaped paperweight into a depression on the top. A star map, a brilliant hologram of the galaxy, appeared above the box.
"NOW, CHOSEN ONE. FOCUS YOUR ENERGY. THE SAME ENERGY YOU USED TO DEFEAT THE SIMULATED HUNTER. FOCUS ON THE PRINCE'S HOME."
You closed your eyes and thought about the crystal city you had seen through the portal. You thought about Prince Fluffington being safe with his family. You felt that same warm, powerful energy build inside you. When you opened your eyes, a single star on the map was glowing brightly.
A gentle, shimmering portal opened next to the box.
👋 A Royal Goodbye
It was time to say goodbye. You knelt down to Prince Fluffington. He nuzzled against your hand and let out a happy little chitter.
"You're going home now," you said softly.
Marcus patted his furry head. "It was nice meeting you, your royal highness."
The prince looked at both of you, then bowed his little head. He then scampered through the portal.
He turned back one last time, gave a final wave of his tiny paw, and then the portal closed, leaving the basement in silence.
🌠 A New Beginning
With the Lunari prince gone, the Guardian Cradle powered down. The artifacts returned to being simple objects. The adventure was over.
"THE CRADLE WILL REMAIN HERE," Sentinel-7 said, its form beginning to fade. "DORMANT. UNTIL IT IS NEEDED AGAIN. UNTIL YOU ARE NEEDED AGAIN. LIVE YOUR LIVES. GROW. LEARN. BUT ALWAYS BE READY, GUARDIANS."
With a final, warm pulse of light, the hologram vanished. The metal box became just a metal box again.
You and Marcus stood in the quiet basement, the silence feeling louder than all the beeping and buzzing from before.
"Was that... real?" Marcus asked after a long time.
You looked at the key, the crystal, and the star in your hands. You looked at the spot where a portal to another world had just been. You looked at the friend who had faced it all with you.
"Yeah," you said, a huge smile spreading across your face. "It was real."
You weren't just a kid anymore. You were a Chosen One. A Protector of the Galaxy.
And you had a feeling this was only the beginning.
