💖 The Final Test
You and Marcus stood in the quiet of the basement, the white heart stone clutched in your hand. The air buzzed with energy.
"YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELVES INTELLIGENT AND COURAGEOUS," Sentinel-7's voice echoed from the box. "BUT THE FINAL TRIAL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. IT IS THE TEST OF THE HEART."
"What do we have to do?" you asked, feeling a new kind of nervousness. This sounded different. More serious.
"YOU DO NOT 'DO' ANYTHING. YOU MUST CHOOSE," the Sentinel replied. "BEHOLD."
The portal swirled open again, but this time you didn't feel a pull. It was like looking through a window into another world.
🌌 A World in Trouble
Through the portal, you saw a strange, rocky landscape under a purple sky with two suns. In the distance, a city made of crystals gleamed.
But the scene wasn't peaceful. A small, furry creature with big, scared eyes was scrambling over the rocks. It was whimpering and clearly terrified.
Behind it, a tall, shadowy figure was closing in. It was made of sharp angles and dark smoke, and it carried a glowing net.
"It's a hunter!" Marcus gasped. "And it's chasing that little guy!"
The little creature tripped and fell. The hunter raised its net, ready to capture it. The creature looked right at the portal, right at you, and let out a heartbreaking cry for help.
"THIS IS THE ZORIAN NEBULA," Sentinel-7 explained. "THE SMALL CREATURE IS A LUNARI, A PEACEFUL SPECIES. THE HUNTER IS A SHADE-STALKER, A BEING THAT CAPTURES RARE CREATURES FOR ITS COLLECTION."
⚖️ The Choice
"HERE IS YOUR CHOICE," the Sentinel boomed, its voice grave. "YOU CAN CLOSE THE PORTAL. THE SHADE-STALKER WILL NOT KNOW YOU ARE HERE. YOU WILL BE SAFE, AND THE TRIALS WILL BE COMPLETE. YOU WILL HAVE PASSED."
"Wait, that's it?" Marcus asked. "We just have to do nothing?"
"THAT IS ONE OPTION," Sentinel-7 confirmed. "OR... YOU CAN CHOOSE TO INTERVENE. YOU CAN STEP THROUGH THE PORTAL AND ATTEMPT TO SAVE THE LUNARI. BUT BE WARNED: THE SHADE-STALKER IS DANGEROUS. I CANNOT GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY. THE TRIAL'S PARAMETERS DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR SURVIVAL IF YOU CHOOSE THIS PATH."
You looked at Marcus. He looked at you. This was a terrible choice. Pass the test and let the little creature get captured? Or risk everything for a total stranger from another galaxy?
Through the portal, the Shade-Stalker swung its net. The Lunari dodged, but just barely. It was exhausted and terrified.
"It's just a test, right?" Marcus said, though he didn't sound sure. "Like the beast in the woods? It's not real?"
"THE CHOICE IS REAL. THE CONSEQUENCES ARE REAL," was all Sentinel-7 said.
You thought about it. What was the point of being intelligent and courageous if you didn't use it to help someone who needed it? It wasn't really a choice at all.
"We have to help him," you said firmly.
Marcus nodded, a look of determination on his face. "Yeah. We do."
You turned back to the hologram. "We're going in."
⚡️ The Power of the Objects
Sentinel-7 was silent for a long moment.
"A BOLD DECISION. PERHAPS A FOOLISH ONE. BUT IT IS YOURS TO MAKE," the hologram said. "THE OBJECTS FROM YOUR FIRST TRIAL ARE NOT MERE TROPHIES. THEY ARE TOOLS. DISCOVER THEIR PURPOSE."
The golden key, the purple crystal, and the star paperweight floated up from the floor. They swirled around you, glowing with intense power.
You grabbed the crystal. Marcus grabbed the key. The star-shaped object hovered between you.
"THE TRIAL OF THE HEART BEGINS... NOW!"
The pull from the portal returned, ten times stronger than before. With a shared look of fear and excitement, you and Marcus let it suck you in.
The world twisted. The basement vanished.
You were on your way to face the hunter.
